Advisory Board · Medical oncologist · AJCC melanoma staging

Antonio Carlos Buzaid, MD

He helped rewrite how melanoma is staged. Then he came home.

One of Latin America’s most cited medical oncologists. Co-author of the AJCC melanoma staging revisions in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (2001, 2009) and the CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians eighth-edition staging paper (2017). ResearchGate lists 200+ publications and 15,000+ citations.

Staging is a kind of honesty

The 1997 Journal of Clinical Oncology paper — Buzaid as first author — did not add a drug. It attacked an inadequate staging system and proposed a better one. The 2001 and 2009 AJCC melanoma classifications, and the 2017 eighth-edition paper in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, are the long tail of that argument. PHP Biotech asked him onto the advisory board because a p53 program will eventually need the same habit: classify the disease honestly before claiming a benefit.

A textbook that left the campus

The Brazilian Manual of Clinical Oncology, which he has co-edited since 2002, is in its 10th edition, in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, with more than 45,000 copies sold. Vencer o Câncer is the public-education counterpart. Authority, for him, has always meant making the literature usable.
